UMINA CRICKET PREMIERS
Club President Peter Barry, described Umina's recent First Grade cricket Premiership victory as, "traumatic for both players and spectators, but very satisfying." Barry cites a strong team focus and healthy junior club as contributors to the victory. "We lost a lot of players at the end of the '95 season. This team took some time to rebuild. It is very satisfying to know that 9 members of the 13 man squad came from the Umina Juniors."
The trauma Barry refers to was a nail biting finish to the final. Setting Narara 157 for victory, Umina's major contributors with the bat were Matt Duggan (33) and Jason Riley (28). Victory looked assured with Narara collapsing at one stage to 8/59.However a 9th wicket partnership clawed Narara back into the match. Umina's Mick Barry made the crucial breakthrough bowling Smythe (42) shortly after tea, giving Barry outstanding figures of 4/13. Within 8 runs off victory, the last Narara wicket fell to a crucial run out, and Umina became the premiers for the first time since 1993-94.
Team captain Jamie Doran described the victory as, "a great finish to a good all round year." Doran gave special mention to the consistency of both Duggan and Riley with the bat throughout the season, and Mick Barry's performance under pressure. After several close matches during the season Doran claims the team learnt from their loss in the previous final, "this year we knew what we had to do to win."
