Civilian widows meet

The Woy Woy branch of the Civilian Widows' Association meets at 1pm on the last Friday of the month at the Ettalong Senior Citizens Centre.
Their main aim is to better the conditions of civilian widows and sole parents and their children.
They meet in "friendship and service", always ready to help each other and enjoy times of companionship, outings and holidays, said publicity officer Mrs Gladys Murray.
"New members are always most welcome and if you would care to sit in at a meeting and decide if you would like to join with us, feel free to do so.
"To all widows of all ages and sole parents in the area, we send an open invitation and hope to meet you."
The Association of Civilian Widows was formed 40 years ago by widows, with the support of Apexians, and is now a registered charity.
Through fund-raising efforts, the association purchased its headquarters building, which also provide hostel accommodation for members.
The building was paid for within a few years and the association now remains debt-free without any government support.
Money is now invested in a scholarship fund to assist children through secondary school and on to tertiary education.
The association also assists members in distress, particularly after damage caused by natural disasters.
"We are not a begging membership but very independent," said Mrs Murray.
