Eight nurses in mentor program

Eight registered nurses from Brisbane Waters Private Hospital attended a Clinical Mentor Program conducted at Gosford Hospital by the Faculty of Nursing, University of Newcastle, on May 14 and 15.
The nurses will be supporting nursing students from Newcastle University when they spend 14 weeks at Brisbane Waters Private Hospital gaining work experience.
The program enables a student, near to the completion of their training, to be taken under the wing of an experienced senior registered nurse.
The nurse will work with the student, attending normal daily duties and patient care, mentoring the student through all activities.
The aim of the program is to give experience in hospital settings, helping them make a smooth transition from university to the wards.
The education the registered nurses received in the Clinical Mentor Program will enable them to assess student performance in the clinical area and identify strategies to enhance the students’ learning needs at that time.
Three students will spend 14 weeks at Brisbane Waters Private Hospital, gaining experience in the Medical, Surgical and Cardiac wards.
The hospital already provides work experience for students from the University of Technology, Sydney.
