Councillors question future of Woy Woy tip

Cr Geoff Row has asked that Gosford Council be advised of any forward plans about the provision of new landfill sites including Woy Woy tip.
He has also suggested new sites have facilities such as crushing of bricks, disposal of green waste and recycling.
"I am currently advised (that) study results indicate a life expectancy of the Woy Woy tip site to the year 2008 but this figure may come down to 2007 or 2005 because of increased requirements in terms of clay covering of rubbish deposited at tips."
Cr Row said he believed it would take five years to establish alternative tip sites.
"That being the case, it is essential that an area be identified soon," he said.
A possible location for a new site would be on the Somersby plateau.
Cr Row said that, if a new site at Somersby was approved, a transfer station at West Gosford would be required.
Cr Lynne Bockholt said a meeting she attended late last year with citizens and council officers was not very helpful.
"I asked quite a few questions but got no answers," she said.
"There was absolute total distress at the meeting at Woy Woy. Most people were unhappy about what's been happening at Woy Woy tip over the last 25 years.
"Things are getting slightly better, but it's slow."
Cr Bell suggested that the ongoing space problems with local landfill sites be a matter for urgent consideration.
Council's director of Development and Environment said the Central Coast Waste Planning and Management Board had engaged a company to undertake a study.
A detailed report is scheduled for submission in October this year said the director.
