Winning surf team at Umina High

Umina High School’s Captain, Nathan Lakajev, and several of the school's old boys were recently declared NSW Surf Team Of The Year.
Early in the season, they won the NSW Rescue and Resuscitation (R&R) title at North Narrabeen, then the National title held at Kurrawa in Queensland.
They had the unusual distinction of being undefeated during the entire season.
Nathan said that the team's success started back in 1996 when they were second at Maroubra in the under-16s State Championships.
The following year, competing at the Mollymook State Championships, they became the State Champions in the under-16s R&R event, recording a loss of only one point, the lowest point score ever.
They then came second at the under-16 Nationals.
In 1997 at Soldiers Beach, they were the only team to ever win the under-16s, under-18s, the open and the six-person R&R titles in the same season.
For Nathan, this training was on top of the significant workload for Year 12 at Umina High.
