Geoff Preece is standing for the seat of Peats as the Australian Democrats candidate.

He has lived in the electorate for 20 years.

Mr Preece said that "this election should be about improving opportunities for community participation in decision making because they certainly are difficult to find right now".

He believes that "whether it is the drugs debate, education, the environment, law and order, asset sales or almost anything you can think of, it seems that policy is made by the few that lead whichever party is in power, the Coalition or Labor".

"There is very little broad discussion that has any ultimate meaning in the community."

Mr Preece said: "That's why we get the nonsense that we get before election time.

"The Democrats would try to change this closed shop approach and try to create more meaningful participation in government.

"The local communities should determine priorities."
