Church holds 'outback' events

The Uniting Church on the Peninsula has celebrated the "Year of the Outback" with two special events.

The annual spring fair was held in the grounds and halls of the Umina church on Saturday, September 14.

The outback theme was reflected in the decorations on the cakes, jams and pickles, crafts, plants, and books stalls, and in a colouring competition for children and a decorate Uluru competition.

A special church service commemorating all those who have served in the outback was held on Sunday, September 15, in the Ettalong Senior Citizens Hall.

Special mention was made of "Frontier Services", formed in 1977 with the creation of the Uniting Church in Australia from the amalgamation of the Presbyterian AIM, the Federal Methodist Inland Mission and the Congregational National Home Mission.

The congregation was told that, over the past 25 years, it had offered a wide range of services to those living in remote areas of the country.

Dr John Flynn founded the AIM in 1912 and the Methodist work began 10 years later.
