Combat litter and win a prize

Peninsula News is sponsoring a "Peninsula Pride" anti-litter competition, giving readers the opportunity to make a difference and win a prize.

Young people and adults are encouraged to submit entries on the two competition themes of "Doing your bit" and "It's your Peninsula".

Prizes include gardening equipment to the value of $30 from G&B Hardware Umina, a morning or afternoon tea to the value of $20 at Gnostic Mana café and McDonalds vouchers for medium cheeseburger meals.

"Doing your bit" entries should have the theme of encouraging people to dispose of their litter properly and can take the form of original poems, drawings, cartoons, slogans and ideas.

Litter can include bottles, cans, plastic, garden cuttings, building materials and household goods such as fridges.

This litter is often dropped from cars, thrown or dumped in the bush, or left on the street.

Entries in the competition's second theme "It's your Peninsula" aims to highlight features of the Peninsula's natural environment and can be original photos, poems, drawings, cartoons, paintings and slogans.

Submit your "Peninsula Pride" entries by 5pm on Tuesday, November 19, to Peninsula News, PO Box 532, Woy Woy 2256.

Include your name, address and phone number and if under 18, your school and your age.

Entries may be published in Peninsula News, and are restricted to people who live, work or go to school on the Peninsula.

A panel of local judges will then select the best entries for each of the competition themes.

Winners will be contacted by telephone, with the prizes presented later at a ceremony.

Prizes will be awarded for creativity and practicality.

A prize will also be awarded to the school with the most competition entries.

One aim of the competition is to highlight the impact of Peninsula residents' actions on our beautiful natural environment.

This impact can be positive or negative.

Another aim is to gather and publicise practical and innovative ideas that can be used to decrease littering on the Peninsula and elsewhere.

For instance good litter prevention ideas could be implemented by schools, community groups or councils.

Anyone wanting further information and wishing to donate prizes should contact Peninsula News manager Cec Bucello on 4342 2070.
