Council considers groundskeeper idea

Council is to decide whether or not it will employ a dedicated groundskeeper to work exclusively on the Umina Beach Reserve, after a notice of motion from Cr Lynne Bockholt.

Giving notice in the council business paper, Cr Bockholt stated: "Council has spent a great deal of money on the Umina Beach Reserve and it is the most popular beach reserve on the Peninsula.

"Council is unable to maintain the area which is heavily used by families, older people, young people using the skateboard ramp, bike track and other leisure areas of the reserve.

"Currently, the Peninsula has two crews of three staff for active parks and the same number for passive parks.

"However, I am informed that the 12 employees are not always on duty together because of sick leave, long service leave, training or annual leave.

"These teams are also responsible for the cricket wickets.

"I receive many complaints about the lack of maintenance in the area and an inspection on any day will reveal dumped rubbish, broken glass, weed growth, unkempt grass, puddles in the bike ramp, graffiti and a general air of untidiness and lack of maintenance on the part of council.

"It is clear that the maintenance situation is untenable and I therefore recommend the motion to councillors."

The matter will be decided at a meeting to be held at the council chambers in Gosford tonight, Tuesday, October 22.
