The inaugural Holly Smith Memorial Trophy was presented at Woy Woy Judo Club's awards day recently.

More than 100 people gathered at Pearl Beach on Sunday, December 8, to honour the high achievers in the club.

The Holly Smith Memorial Trophy is named after former member, 19-year-old Holly Smith, who was killed in a flying accident in Melbourne in July this year.

Holly played a major part in the club as a student and ambassador on the trips to Okayama, Japan.

"Holly was very popular and always gave 100 per cent to the other members and her teachers," said club secretary Ms Lindy Simmons.

Holly represented the club at both State and National level.

President of the Woy Woy Judo Club, Mr Danny Simmons, and secretary Ms Lindy Simmons wanted to keep Holly's love of judo alive and did so by naming an award after her.

It would be awarded for dedication and achievement in the sport.

The inaugural winner of the Holly Smith Memorial Trophy was Drew Evans of Tascott.

Drew is a senior brown belt who this year dedicated his spare time to helping the coaches with beginners and school sport.

In October, he gained his level one coaching accreditation.

Member for Peats, Ms Marie Andrews, presented the trophy.

Other trophies went to Kieren Handley, 8, who received the Brumby's Bread Rookie of the Year award; Justin Miles, 12, who received the Peninsula Community Centre School for Seniors Novice Shield; and Naomi Cole, 12, who received the Edward Dittel Peninsula Community Centre Shield for being most competitive player.

Other awards included five encouragement awards to Hester Kogler, Tiarna Richardson, Marc Mayes, Jacqui and Rebecca Steward.

Best and fairest awards went to Samantha Travers and Kayla Wells.

The Coach's Award went Joshua Rowe and to Sean Cole.

Teachers Danny Simmons, Steve Fuller and Cliff Dawson also took part in the presentations.

The day was sponsored by Woy Woy Poultry Supplies, Colonial Bakery and McDonalds.

Ms Andrews said: "Congratulations to all those who received awards, and thanks to Danny and Lindy Simmons for their enormous commitment to judo and sport on the Central Coast."

Woy Woy Judo Club is a non-profit sporting club, teaching judo to persons aged from seven years through to seniors.

Qualified instructors, who are all members of the Judo Federation of Australia, train their students for state wide, national and even international events.
