Residential flats gain approval
Gosford Council has approved a residential flat building at 73 Memorial Ave, Blackwall, despite the fact that the development has less open space than required by the 2(b) medium density zoning.
Several neighbours to the property had complained to the council that this would be an over-development for the site.
The council officers' report stated that with the exception of open space, the proposal complied with the Development Control Plan for the area and that the open space shortfall of two per cent was minor.
In a discussion about the development, mayor Cr Robert Bell said: "If we take the zoning into account, we have to make sure that it is not an over-development.
Cr Bell suggested that the council could ask the State Government to reconsider some of the zoning issues on the Peninsula.
Cr Craig Doyle said: "This is permissible in a 2(b) zone.
"It does comply on a majority of factors.
"This is why we are trying to get rid of medium density.'
"It's an unfortunate situation."
Cr Lynne Bockholt said: "This is an epidemic on the Peninsula.
"It was zoned without any consultation and people like these (the neighbours) are powerless and speechless.
"It's a silent concrete epidemic.
"The character statement is not worth the paper it's written on.
"It is an absolute disgrace and the people on the Peninsula are suffering while nobody is doing anything to address their concerns."
