New undercover walkways at Ettalong Public School were officially opened with a morning tea on November 25.

Those attending included Member for Peats Ms Marie Andrews, parents, teachers and school principal Mr Bruce Donaldson.

"Most of the money that was used to pay for these walkways was donated," said Mr Donaldson.

"Ettalong Memorial Bowling Club donated $10,000 from their poker machine income, $30,000 was donated by the State Government and the other $40,000 was raised by the Parents and Citizens Association.

"The walkways are good for shade in summer and for shelter from the rain.

Mr George Markham from the bowling club said: "The club is happy to help and support Ettalong Public School.

"It's good to see that the kids get shelter from sun and rain while changing classes."

The year six school leaders, Jessica Allan, Rachael McMinn and Matthew Hogan were also happy with the outcome, all agreeing with their colleague Steven Collier when he said: "It made a difference to the school.

"It provides us with more shade and when it's raining and you are out on messages you don't get wet."

"The school looks stylish and classy now," said teacher Ms Trish Carney.

Parent Ms Linda Deltman said: "As a parent, I have a child in kindergarten.

"I knew something was missing.

"The kids couldn't go about the school when it was raining without getting wet.

"These shelters provide shade in winter and make it cooler in summer.

"They also make coming to school more comfortable for the kids.

"They've also made the school look very nice."

Another teacher, Ms Denise Chambers, said: "The teachers and children at Ettalong really appreciate the covered walkways and they look great."

"This is one of the best improvements the school has ever made," commented another teacher, Mrs Hunting.

Ms Andrews said: "I want to congratulate the P&C and the Ettalong Memorial Bowling Club and all the other people involved and I am more than pleased to lend my support to this very worthwhile project."

The construction of the walkways was done by Williams River Steel of Morisset.

Year six students Jessica Allan and Matthew Hogan helped cut the ribbon along with a representative from Williams River Steel.
