Judo year ends with tournament

Woy Woy Judo Club ended the competition year with 17 players attending the St Mary's RSL youth club tournament on November 17 in a wide variety of age and weight divisions.

The four players in the under-10 age group obtained two gold, one silver and one bronze.

The gold medal winners were Kieren Handley (8) and Joshua Rowe (9), with Brandon Grosse (7) a silver medalist and Brendon White (7) winning bronze.

The eight players in the under-13s also performed well with Megan Gorst (11), Marc Mayes (12) and Jolin Richardson (12) obtaining gold.

Leah Davey (10), Kayla Wells (11), Naomi Cole (11), Rebecca Steward (11) and Drew Stevenson (12) all won silver.

This was the first tournament for Jolin Richardson and Drew Stevenson who only commenced training eight weeks ago.

Rebecca Steward entered an extra division and Naomi Cole also went into the under-16s with both of them receiving bronze medals.

Silver medals were won by Thomas Dell in under-16s, Daniel Simmons in young men's, and Craig Gorst in the over-100kg men's open division.

The medal tally for the club was five gold, nine silver and three bronze.

Although competition has finished for 2002, training still continues at the Peninsula Community Centre until school holidays commence.
